Ciao a tutti! If you’ve been googling “is Rome safe this summer” or “how hot is Rome in July” at 2am before your trip, you’re not alone. It’s been the big question on everyone’s mind lately, and honestly, fair enough.Let’s start with the heat, because it’s real. We’re talking mid-30s°C most afternoons (that’s mid-90s°F for my American friends), with things cooling off a bit in the evening. It’s the kind of heat that sneaks up on you if you’re power-walking between the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain with a gelato in each hand.
Here’s my golden rule for summer in Rome:
Mornings and evenings are for walking, afternoons are for hiding.I plan my tours around this every single day. We start early, before the sun gets serious, hit the big sites while the light is soft and the crowds are thinner, and then we retreat somewhere with shade, good food, or ideally both. If you’re doing the Colosseum on your own, I’d genuinely recommend a night opening if one’s available. Seeing it under the stars, without melting, is a different experience entirely.
As for safety:
I get asked this a lot given everything in the news lately. Rome hasn’t changed. Life here goes on exactly as it always has: markets are full, restaurants are busy, and the biggest risk to your trip is still a pickpocket on the metro, not anything more dramatic.
